In their place, planners hope to draw high-paying industries, a movie and TV sound studio, a retail village, apartments, a high-tech high school, Metrolink station and a park with lakes atop the old gravel pits. ``The area doesn't have to be a wasteland,'' said Bruce Ackerman, chairman and chief executive officer of the Economic Alliance, and a member of the study team. ``Somebody's got to go in there with a plan to rebuild the area so it has some sense of environmental (purpose), generates good jobs and provides decent housing.'' The study is expected to take three to six months. The 20-member volunteer study team, led by Pollak, will include architects, attorneys, economic development specialists and an engineer, city planner and real estate agent. About 150 students at the California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni.
