Dozens of artists across the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 will open their studios during the first weekend in October, welcoming visitors for an inside look at their work and livelihood.

In all, 37 artists will participate in the Valley Artist Studio Tour, inviting ticket holders to take self-guided tours A self-guided tour is where one navigates a route themselves as opposed to an escorted tours where a tour guide person directs the route, times, information, and places toured. Many self-guided tours come with suggestions, maps, instructions, directions, and items to see or do.  across the neighborhoods to view or purchase their works.

``Traditionally, you don't think of the San Fernando Valley. ... But there are a lot of artists - and really good ones,'' said Marcia Robbins, spokeswoman for the Valley Cultural Center, which is hosting the tour with the San Fernando Valley Arts Council An arts council is a government or private, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the arts mainly by funding local artists, awarding prizes, and organizing events at home and abroad. .

``It's an eclectic group of artists, and the San Fernando Valley owns them.''

Many of the studios are within the artists' homes, taking visitors from Encino to Chatsworth, Woodland Hills to Northridge, as well as to the North Hollywood arts Hollywood Arts is a full-service art center opened in Hollywood, California. The program is unique in that it is designed to give homeless, runaway and at-risk teenagers access to the arts both for art therapy and to teach job-readiness and life skills that will help them get off  community.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 the weekend of the event, and include both days, as well as the gala reception and art auction Oct. 4 at the art gallery at Los Angeles Pierce College

San Fernando Valley Arts Council member Thelma Starr called the works being shown ``beautiful.''

``It's really exciting for the San Fernando Valley to do something like this,'' she said. ``The arts have always been in the Valley. We're just opening an avenue here.''
