because all his attention was on playing basketball.

A recent nationwide poll reported that 55 percent of African-American middle- and high school students said they believe they might be good enough to someday play professional basketball. Minor says he used to be one of them, but he now realizes the importance of an education.

During his prep career (1992-95), Minor scored 1,867 points and averaged 20.7 points. He was also named All-State as a senior and was recruited by Utah, Long Beach State, Penn State, USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. Without the grades and the SAT score to become eligible for Division I basketball, he went the JC route at South Plains College in Texas.

``I was very hurt by that,'' said Minor, 20. ``All my life, all I wanted to do was play basketball. It was a wake-up call. I realize now that you have to have the grades, too. In high school, my head was too big and I told myself that I didn't have to do all this (school work). But in the end, it came back to haunt me.

``When I saw the (poll) last week, I started laughing. I could relate to it very easily. Back then, all I thought about was basketball, basketball and basketball.''

Minor averaged 11.5 points for the Texans as a freshman during the 1995-96 season. After five games, the 6-3, 194-pounder has shown the offensive skills he displayed during his prep days. The sophomore entered the week as the Big Sky's second leading scorer at 21 points per game.

Minor has not ditched his dream of playing professional basketball, but he has become more realistic. He has thought about coaching on the high school or college level. He also understands that a degree is needed for such a position.

``My dad and mom used to always tell me, `It's your grades,'' Minor said. ``I realize now that I have to take care of my business in school.''
