STUDENTS SEEK FUND-RAISING HELP TO SUPPORT D.C. TRIP.Byline: Joanne Crawford Education columnist LAKE LOS ANGELES Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. - Challenger Middle School eighth-graders are seeking donations as well as ideas and volunteers for money-making projects to fund a May 25 trip to Washington, D.C. Students began planning the learning adventure about American history last September, Principal Kevin Wassner said. Hard work by teacher Bruce Galler, students, parents and others made the dream possible, but more money is still needed. ``For some students, coming up with $970 is as easy as asking parents or grandparents grandparents npl → abuelos mpl grandparents grand npl → grands-parents mpl grandparents grand npl ,'' Galler said. ``For others, selling candy bars and saving allowances was how they earned their ways.'' But he said time is growing short and more money is still needed. Any last-minute ideas or donations to the fund would be gratefully welcomed, he said. The trip price includes air fare, a charter bus, security and admission to various events and places. The students will take a guided tour guided tour guide n → visite guidée; what time does the guided tour start? → la visite guidée commence à quelle heure? of the capital, visit the museums of Air and Space, American History and the National Gallery of Art. They also will see the Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation. and Vietnam veterans memorials. The students will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery; commemorates nameless war dead. [Am. Barbara Boxer Barbara Levy Boxer (born November 11, 1940) is an American politician and the current junior U.S. Senator from the State of California. A member of the Democratic Party, Boxer was first elected to the U.S. or Sen. Dianne Feinstein. To raise money, the students are planning to sell Valentine's Day greeting cards. They also are collecting aluminum cans and have held a holiday craft fair, a dance and similar projects for the trip ``general fund.'' Galler also raised money with pledges for carrying an American flag in the Los Angeles Marathon The Los Angeles Marathon is an annual marathon held in Los Angeles, California since 1986. It was inspired by the success of the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. The race starts at about 8:15AM and runs through Downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown, the Crenshaw district, and two years in a row. ``The students' general fund helps to defray de·fray tr.v. de·frayed, de·fray·ing, de·frays To undertake the payment of (costs or expenses); pay. [French défrayer, from Old French desfrayer : des-, student costs by providing . . . about $20 per day in expense money,'' Galler said. Challenger students visited Washington the past two years. Those trips were also supported by fund-raising efforts. ``This school is where the community comes for sports and dances, night classes and numerous other events,'' Wassner said. ``If somebody like Bruce is willing to go the extra distance for these kids, then I'm going to do what I can to help him because it's good for everyone out here.''
