STUDENTS SAY `SAVE' ESSAYS ESPOUSE WISDOM OF SMART MONEY MANAGEMENT.

Byline: Mark Kellam Valley News Writer

``A penny saved is a penny earned.'' That famous quote associated with Benjamin Franklin was at the center of an essay contest held recently at Columbus Elementary in Van Nuys.

Fourth-graders at the school wrote essays about the value of saving money.

Maria Palacios' essay took first place. In it, she wrote that it's important to save money because you'll need it to buy necessities such as a house, food and clothes. She also pointed out the importance of keeping charities in mind. ``When you help other people with money, they might help you when you need it,'' she wrote.

Damaris Urrutia, who came in second, said it's important to save money when children are young so they can go to college when they grow up.
