STUDENTS PROFIT MOST FROM MACOMB COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOND
 CONTINUATION VICTORY
WARREN, Mich., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- "Students choosing Macomb Community College for their education were the winners in tonight's election," said College President Albert L. Lorenzo, following passage of Macomb's bond continuation proposal in Tuesday's general election. Unofficial results place the margin of victory for the proposal at 149,191 to 127,600, with 100 percent of the precincts reporting.
The proposal asked voters to authorize the college to borrow $15.9 million through the sale of general obligation bonds. The college had recently paid off a loan for a like amount and was in the position to borrow more without raising the current tax rate. The bond sale will maintain the average homeowner cost of about $1.69 a year after property tax credits and federal income tax deductions.
"Passage of the ballot proposal preserves the integrity of this institution and protects the community's investment," said Lorenzo. "It enables the college to continue to adapt so that it can meet the changing educational needs of Macomb County residents."
Projects to be funded by the bond sale include the expansion of the computer curriculum, installation of a telephone registration system, compliance with state environmental quality and safety standards, improvements in handicapped access, and replacement of classroom furniture and equipment.
"Many of our buildings are nearly 30 years old," noted Lorenzo. "Just like a house, they will only increase in value if they are taken care of." The money borrowed through the bond sale, he added, will enable the college to protect the community's investment.
"Macomb County residents have proven again that they support this college and the ideal of accessible education," said Lorenzo. "We appreciate that support and credit it for Macomb's reputation as a quality institution."
Macomb Community College is one of the nation's leading community colleges. With an emphasis on student success, the college offers a variety of educational opportunities for updating occupational skills, exploring new careers, or preparing for transfer to a four-year college or university. The recently opened University Center at Macomb Community College offers bachelor's degrees in 15 programs.
