 received $1,000 scholarships to help offset higher-education expenses.

``McDonald's is proud to contribute toward the academic goals of these exceptional students,'' said Patricia Williams, a McDonald's owner/operator and program chairwoman. ``I'm confident that each of the recipients has the power and determination to achieve their dreams, and will continue to give back to their communities.''

Scholarship recipients were selected on the basis of their leadership skills and academic standing, in addition to the strength of their high school transcripts, letters of recommendation and an essay detailing their commitment to making a difference in the community.

Each year, the scholarship is available to high school seniors residing in the counties of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino San Bernardino, city, United States
San Bernardino (săn bûr'nədē`nō), city (1990 pop. 164,164), seat of San Bernardino co., S Calif., at the foot of the San Bernardino Mts.; inc. 1854.
 and Ventura. In all, 50 Southern California high school seniors received $1,000 schorlarships this year.

Christine Devine, news anchor for KTTV (Channel 11), served as master of ceremonies at the luncheon, and former talk show host Rolanda Watts delivered the keynote address.

The program is sponsored by the McDonald's Operators' Association of Southern California, and scholarships are jointly funded by grants from the Global and Southern California chapters of Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities is to improve the health and well-being of children in Southern California through various lodging and wellness programs, which include four Ronald McDonald Houses, Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times, and a community grants board.

Since its inception in 1987, the charity has awarded more than $10 million to more than 400 organizations in Southern California that directly benefit children.
