STUDENTS GROW TREES AND BRANCH OUT ENVIRONMENTALLY; PELLA CORPORATION PROVIDES 'GROW YOUR OWN TREE' EDUCATION KITS TO SECOND GRADERS

PELLA, Iowa, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Bristlecone pine trees are the oldest living things on earth, and giant sequoia trees are the largest living things on earth. These are just a few of the amazing facts 110,000 second grade students across the country are learning thanks to Pella Corporation, the world's second largest wood window and door manufacturer.
The National Arbor Day Foundation's "Grow Your Own Tree" education kits are being provided free of charge to second grade teachers across the United States from Maine to Hawaii. The education kits, which normally cost teachers $19.95, include filmstrips, audio tapes, posters, teacher's guides and planting supplies.
According to Wayne Bevis, president and chief executive officer of Pella Corporation, "The 'Grow Your Own Tree' education kit provides an excellent opportunity to teach children about the wonders of trees and the need for tree stewardship. As a wood window and door manufacturer, we feel a great responsibility toward educating the community on tree stewardship and providing free access to a number of environmental programs developed by The National Arbor Day Foundation."
Last year, Pella Corporation and its local Pella Window Stores initiated the first-ever corporate sponsorship of the "Grow Your Own Tree" education kit by sponsoring over 85,000 second graders across the country. The 1993 sponsorship is inspiring a new group of second graders who will participate in growing trees and learning tree stewardship.
"We at Pella Corporation believe in working with and protecting the environment," said Bevis. "Since we manufacture fine quality wood products, we recognize the need for proper stewardship and education to ensure an everlasting supply of trees."
John Rosenow, executive director of The National Arbor Day Foundation, praises Pella Corporation for its environmental commitment and leadership.
"Pella Corporation has led the way in providing strong, creative support for The National Arbor Day Foundation and its educational programs -- both for youth and professional audiences throughout America," Rosenow said. "For corporations, a commitment to environmental stewardship is a promise to the future. It is a promise that Pella Corporation fully intends to keep by helping to educate those who are responsible for the care of our nation's trees."
Pella Corporation's involvement with The National Arbor Day Foundation also extends to sponsorship of the Building With Trees workshops for architects, builders and developers. One extension of the workshops is a Building With Trees brochure developed by Pella Corporation, which provides an overview of the process and benefits involved in building with trees. In addition, Pella Corporation has been designated as "The Official Windows and Doors of the Lied Conference Center" at Arbor Day Farm scheduled for completion in the fall of 1993. The Lied Conference Center is the only facility of its kind in America and will be used as an education complex for study and discussion of trees and conservation.
Pella Corporation is the second largest manufacturer of premium wood windows and doors. The company is headquartered in Pella, with additional manufacturing facilities located in Carroll and Shenandoah, Iowa, as well as Panningen, Holland. Pella products are sold in a network of Pella Windows Stores and selected building materials retailers.
