A team of North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. The school mascot is the husky, and the school colors are blue, white, grey.  students won $20,000 in scholarships Tuesday and the right to compete in Washington, D.C., in a contest that had them adjusting interest rates as a mock Federal Reserve Committee.

The students will split the scholarship money. In addition, the high school will be given $11,000 and Schiller will receive $5,000 from the Federal Reserve System's annual competition, sponsored by Citibank.

Teams from John Burroughs High in Burbank and from Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  in Sherman Oaks also competed. The North Hollywood team will represent the area in the national competition in May, vying for $30,000 in scholarships.

The competition called for the students to do research, analyze data on near-term economic conditions and recommend whether the Federal Reserve should raise, lower or maintain interest rates. Posing as the Federal Open Market Committee led by Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan Alan Greenspan

, each team made a 15-minute presentation on the economy and then fielded questions from the judges.

The North Hollywood students were among those who recommended that the Fed should stay at the current rate, ``but should keep their eyes open for inflation.''

The North Hollywood team had the edge in the question and answer section, said Jim Charkins, a contest judge and professor of economics at California State University, San Bernardino California State University, San Bernardino is a state-funded university in San Bernardino, California, part of the California State University System. The university was founded in 1965. Enrollment annually tops 16,000 and is on pace to reach more than 20,000 by 2010. .

``Your ability to take the information and use it to analyze the facts shows the depth of your knowledge and that really was the tie breaker,'' Charkin said.

Calvin Naito, Federal Reserve Bank spokesman, said the contest is healthy for teens.
