STUDENTS BONE UP FOR SCIENCE BOWL PRACTICE SESSION LETS PLAYERS PREPARE FOR COMING CONTEST.

Just ask the high schoolers who attended Saturday's Science Bowl practice competition, where 26 teams from throughout the county - including 13 from the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

 - beefed up their skills in preparation for the regional championship this February.

``It's very exciting seeing this level of knowledge and competency in students only 15 to 17 years old. Some will grow to be real leaders in physics, science and math, our future teachers and scientists.... These are the top of the top,'' said Walter Zeisl, spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

The competition involves Family Feudlike teams of four players and one alternate, who must beat their opponents to the buzzer with timed correct answers.

``You have a lot of smart people. It's a lot of studying and practicing,'' said 16-year-old North Hollywood High School North Hollywood High School, originally called Lankershim High School when it opened in 1927, is a secondary school in North Hollywood in Los Angeles, California. Teams from public, private and highly gifted magnet The Highly Gifted Magnet (HGM) is one of the Los Angeles Unified School District's Gifted and Talented programs, restricted to students who meet the criterion of 99.9% on an intellectual assessment that meets the eligibility requirements of the district which is an IQ of 145 or  schools like North Hollywood prepare all year by memorizing science and math trivia and then quizzing each other during practice rounds.

``These are self-motivated, self-starting kids that just like this,'' North Hollywood coach and science teacher Len Soloff said.

Many of the students who participate in Science Bowl go on to win top scholarships and prizes, Soloff said.

``We've come up against very tough teams and it's very scary. My hands were all sweaty,'' North Hollywood senior David Lee, 17, said of Saturday's practice competition.

It was the first competition ever for the students who came from Birmingham High School Birmingham High School is a public coeducational high school in the neighborhood/district of Lake Balboa in the San Fernando Valley section of the city of Los Angeles, California. The school is a part of District One of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).  in Van Nuys. They were glad to learn the rules, and get a feel for the game in advance.

``It's a good time to practice because you don't usually get to meet with other schools and see how they do,'' Armen Yerevanian, 15, a sophomore at the Armenian General Benevolent Union The Armenian General Benevolent Union (Armenian: Հայկական Բարեգործական Ընդհանուր  Manoogian-Demirdjian School in Canoga Park said.

The winners of the Feb. 23 regional championship will be invited to participate in the national championship in Washington, D.C., this May.

Los Angeles schools have consistently placed in top ranks in the event, which is sponsored nationally by the U.S. Department of Energy.

`It's exciting, I have to admit I live through them vicariously a little bit,'' said Tim Liggett, a Venice High School Venice High School may refer to:
