Dominic Thiroux, a jazz-bass musician from Chatsworth, won a $10,000 ARTS Gold Award in Jazz from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (known by the acronym NFAA honors the most talented high school seniors in the performing, visual and literary arts from the United States through the youngARTS program.(formerly known as the acronym ARTS). .

Dominic was honored Wednesday with 20 other California high school California High School (commonly referred to as Cal High) is a public school located in San Ramon, California, a suburb of San Francisco, Oakland, and Silicon Valley. Its mascot is a Grizzly Bear. The school's newspaper is The Californian which is published monthly.  seniors, who shared an additional $35,000 in cash awards.

Lindsey Glenn of Hillside Middle School in Simi Valley, Josie Godel of Aliso High School in Reseda and John Zee Kitapszyan of First Lutheran School in Glendale were grand prize winners of Tilly's ``Character Counts'' essay contest, co-sponsored by the Daily News.

They received $500 savings bonds while their teachers received $500 gift certificates for school supplies.

Nineteen other students received gift certificates ranging from $25 to $100. They are:

 in Simi Valley, Elizabeth Rubio of Fremont Intermediate, Gene Selle of Fremont Intermediate, Carol Torres of Sunny Brae Elementary School in Winnetka and Rosie Tucker of Pinecrest School.

Erica Solomon of West Hills took home $1,000 as the first-place winner of the Anti-Defamation League's third annual human relations essay contest for her entry on bigotry.

One of three honorable mentions went to Randal Marlise Curtis of Panorama City for his essay titled ``A Call For Peace: No Room For Hate.'' He received a $100 scholarship.

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic-Los Angeles announced that three of its six Winslow Coyne Reitnouer Scholastic Achievement Awards will go to local students with vision impairments and/or learning disabilities.

Nick Guarino of Westmark High School in Encino won $2,000 for first place for earning high marks in school and participating in various community activities; Heather Bandy bandy /ban·dy/ (band´e) bowed or bent in an outward curve.  of Reseda and John Joseph A. Gatchalian of Simi Valley tied for second place and won $500 for their achievements.

Seven local high school students received $2,000 Chancellor's Scholarships from the University of California, Santa Barbara History
