The 10-year-old's formula won a spot among the top 10 semifinalists in Dreyer's statewide search for the Flavor of California, a contest open to adults and children alike. More than 8,000 ice cream inventors entered the search for the new flavor to be selected as the official ice cream the company will market to help celebrate California's 150th birthday. Tommy's mom, Lori Horton-Guarini relies on Tommy to help out when she is at work. ``I can call him on my cell phone on the way home from work and ask him to start dinner, and he will,'' she laughed. By the time the family of six sits down at the dinner table, a full course meal prepared by Tommy is ready to serve, she said. But Horton-Guarini already considers Tommy a winner, if not the winner. ``He's more excited about the free ice cream than winning a contest,'' she said. ``And me, the minute I saw that his entry made the semifinals, I told him he should add that accomplishment to his resume when he applies to culinary school.''
