PALMDALE - A Palmdale High School student was hit by a car and seriously injured Tuesday afternoon while riding his bicycle across a street after getting out of school.

Flavio Montes, 13, was hit by a car after another car had stopped for him in the middle of a block and its driver gestured to him to go across the street, deputies said.

The boy had been riding along the dirt beside Avenue R about a half mile east of the high school when a friend with him saw another friend across the street and went across to talk to him, deputies said. Flavio started across later and was in the fast lane when he was hit.

Motorist Miguel Garcia, 20, of Palmdale hit his brakes when he saw the bicyclist but couldn't stop in time, deputies said.

Flavio suffered a depressed skull fracture and possibly a broken leg and shoulder, deputies said. He was flown by helicopter to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
