and unreasonable,'' said Shirokoff, 18, who brought smiles - and some consternation - to a few faces when he wore his $1 thrift-store purchase. ``We live in an era where celebrities wear dresses and slacks.''

Patricia Flenner, coordinator of Poly's math and science magnet, where Shirokoff is a student, said the stunt exemplifies Shirokoff's free spirit.

Paul Sims, chairman of the school's music department, also praised Shirokoff's independent thinking skills.

``What makes him stand out as a student is his uniqueness,'' Sims said. ``He doesn't want to follow anyone.''

A National Merit Scholar, Shirokoff holds the school's top awards in music, math and science. This year he was captain of the Science Bowl team, which placed second regionally, and was a member of the Junior Engineering Technical Society.
