STUDENT CHEFS SERVE HISTORIC MEAL.

Byline: - Lisa Sodders

Culinary students at Mission College stepped back in time Wednesday, donning period garb and serving up a meal that England's Queen Elizabeth Queen Elizabeth, or Elizabeth, may refer to: Living people

might have enjoyed 400 years earlier.

The menu included an entree of salmon and meat pie, with shrewsberry cakes, spiced bread, cheesecake and strawberries and cream offered for dessert.

``I'm always into adventure, and this is an adventure for sure,'' said Jackie Bauder, 69, of West Hills as she sampled an appetizer of onion pottage - a creamy soup - served in a rustic bread bowl.

``This is not on Weight Watchers,'' joked her daughter, Kim Conley, 42, of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. . ``It's outstanding. It's delicious and interesting because I think the students did some research on it, and it shows. The presentation is so beautiful, too.''

Mission College culinary arts students prepared the meal for about 100 guests in honor of the 400th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's reign. Instructor Lara Brosseau said the meal was based on historical sources, including ``Dining with William Shakespeare'' by Madge Lorwin.

``Shrewsbury cakes are butter cookies with nutmeg nutmeg, name applied to members of the family Myristicaceae. The true nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) is an evergreen tree native to the Moluccas but now cultivated elsewhere in the tropics and to a limited extent in S Florida. , and spiced bread is a yeast bread with mace,'' Brosseau explained.

Mission's culinary arts students frequently cater events off-campus, but this was the first time they've produced an Elizabethan-theme luncheon.
