This is the first accident of this kind at the school, officials said.

The teen, a ninth-grader at Moorpark High, remained conscious and coherent while waiting for the ambulance, said Capt. Kevin Davis of the Ventura County Fire Department Not to be confused with Ventura Fire Department.

"The young man showed extreme bravery for what he went through," DePasquale said, stressing that he was pleased with how quick school and Fire Department officials responded to the incident.

Early Wednesday, district officials debriefed all individuals involved, and plan to do a thorough check of the wood shop to prevent such accidents from occurring again, DePasquale said.

Moorpark High School Principal John McIntosh added that school administrators will also do what they can to ensure a safe environment on campus.

"We are devising strategies to do the best that we can to make sure that accidents like this don't happen in the future," McIntosh said.
