STRYKER PROFITS UP 31 PERCENT FOR QUARTER ENDED MARCH 31, 1993

 KALAMAZOO, Mich., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Stryker Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: STRY) reported today that net sales for the first quarter ended March 31, 1993, were $135,202,000, representing a 20-percent increase over sales of $112,590,000 in 1992. Net earnings for the quarter increased 31 percent to $14,450,000 from $11,030,000 in 1992 and net earnings per share increased 30 percent to $0.30 from $0.23 in 1992.
 Sales of Surgical products increased 20 percent in the first quarter of 1993 compared to 1992. The leading Surgical sales gains came from orthopedic implants, endoscopic systems and powered surgical instruments.
 Sales of Medical products increased 22 percent in the first quarter of 1993 compared to 1992. The Medical gain resulted from increased shipments of patient handling products and increased revenues from physical therapy services.
 International sales increased 28 percent in the first quarter, led by Osteonics orthopedic implant and endoscopic system sales by the Pacific Division and Dimso spinal implant sales by the Europe Division. International sales were 35 percent of total sales in 1993 and 33 percent in 1992.
