``I feel very bad for Bartolo and we need him,'' Santana said. ``But the rest of us have to keep going and do our job and help the team win. Today, I felt good, all my pitches were working, but the hitters also did a great job.

``They gave me a big lead early in the game, and they allowed me to get comfortable on the mound.''

The Angels took control early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Salmon hit his 297th career home run.

In the third inning, the Angels extended their lead to 4-0 when Anderson came through with a two-out, two-run single, and Robb Quinlan Robb William Quinlan (born March 17, 1977 in St. Paul, Minnesota) is a Major League Baseball player. In the fourth, Maicer Izturis led off with a double but Texas starter John Koronka came back to get the next two batters out. The Rangers then intentionally walked Vladimir Guerrero to get to Rivera.

The move backfired when Rivera hit a shot over the left-field wall for his 19th home run of the season to give the Angels a 7-0 lead.

That proved to be more than enough support for Santana. He entered Saturday having lost two consecutive decisions but he did a good job of shutting down the Rangers.

Santana limited them to two earned runs while scattering five hits and striking out five.

``Ervin made a lot of big pitches today and he put zeroes on the board,'' Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. ``Not only did he win the game, but he also gave our bullpen a breather and that was important.''

The Rangers did get two runs, only one of which was earned, off Santana in the fifth inning and another in the sixth on a run-scoring triple by Hank Blalock to cut the Angels' lead to 7-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Howie Kendrick led off by extending his hitting streak to 15 games when he doubled off the third-base bag. With one out, Guerrero was walked intentionally for the third time.

A wild pitch sent runners to second and third and Rivera delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in his fourth run of the game. Anderson came through with a run-scoring single to give the Angels a 9-3 lead.

About the only disappointing aspect for the Angels was Guerrero's 44- game hitting streak against Texas came to an end.

The Rangers walked him four times. In his only official at-bat, Guerrero hit a fly ball deep to right field on which Mark DeRosa made a sprawling over-the-shoulder catch.

``I hit that ball fairly well but I didn't think it was going to go that far,'' Guerrero said through an interpreter. ``The ball travels well here during the day but DeRosa is a good athlete and he got a good jump on it.

``If it dropped, then fine and when it didn't, it didn't bother me. We still won and that's the most important thing.''
