STRING TIME; YOUNG MUSICIANS TO PERFORM.

Byline: Michael Coit Daily News Staff Writer

The killer B's - Bach, Brahms and Bartok - awaited Greg Fried's string musicians Monday as they returned from the weekend to rehearse re·hearse

Fried was encouraging and demanding during the 50-minute session.

``Now you've done some really good playing, but I need to bring you back,'' he told the 60 musicians packed into a portable classroom at Lindero Canyon Middle School Lindero Canyon Middle School is a public middle school in suburban Agoura Hills, California. It is located west of Morrison Ranch district and north of Lake Lindero. It serves the entire city of Agoura Hills and is one of three middle schools of the Las Virgenes Unified School . ``Anybody can do a junior high concert. This is different.

``You've got to show the world that you're professionals.''

Conducting will be Eric Fried, an associate professor of music at Texas Tech University and the older brother of Greg Fried.

With a paying crowd of as many as 300 expected, the young musicians could be forgiven a case of nerves. Yet several who also will perform solos said they are eager for the opportunity to perform in public.

``The more times you perform you get used to it,'' Kelly Bunch said of the pressure. ``With judges, they hear all the bad stuff. This audience will be fine.''

Kelly, with eight years on violin, will perform a work by Kreisler as the last solo before the finale featuring all the musicians.

Derek Chang, with two years on violin, and Howard Chou, with only a year on the instrument, also seemed loose and ready to perform the concert's only duet, which will be a work by Mozart.

``We two are about the same. He's there to cover up my mistakes,'' Derek said with a chuckle.

The musicians, though, know there's no place to hide Wednesday. ``One of the things I tell the kids is you should always sound good,'' Greg Fried said. ``It's stuff the audience will enjoy.''

Another challenge of the concert will be performing under an unfamiliar conductor.

 for the Lubbock Symphony.

Greg Fried conducts the New West Youth Symphony, and he said Wednesday's concert is an important stage in the young musicians' development.

The musicians, indeed, will only meet Eric Fried on Wednesday and have maybe 45 minutes together before the concert.

Yet the skill of following the lead of both conductors and the written music is just another skill developed by the string prodigies.
