, the Redevelopment Committee will host a street fair next month in the hope of changing residents' views about the old retail district.

The event, scheduled for 2 to 10 p.m. Sept. 26, will feature street entertainers, music, crafts vendors and children's games. And with the fun, committee members anticipate that residents will get excited about changes coming to the downtown area, which could become the next village-style shopping draw.

``I think part of it is to bring folks to Newhall,'' said Glenn Adamick, associate planner for the city's community development department. ``We want them to have a good time down there, to feel safe down there and to come back.''

City leaders plan to create a district with cafes, boutiques and theaters, but the area is now lined with auto repair shops, food markets and video stores.

Renovations have begun, however, and the city recently completed the extension and widening of Railroad railroad or railway, form of transportation most commonly consisting of steel rails, called tracks, on which freight cars, passenger cars, and other rolling stock are drawn by one locomotive or more.  Avenue, adding old-style streetlights that may eventually line surrounding sur·round

``We want to get people used to coming downtown,'' committee member Tom Frew said. ``I think they're going to be very impressed im·press 1

The committee started preparing for some kind of downtown event in December, just as plans for improvements were getting under way.

Though committee members discussed several ideas, they decided to coordinate the event with the annual Heart of the West event in Hart Park and Media One's dance demonstration on the same day, Adamick said.

``We kind of kicked it into high gear,'' Adamick said. ``It logically worked out. With the events going on in Newhall that weekend, we really wanted to take advantage of that.''

Several other events may follow, including a farmers market, Frew said.

Two streets will be partially shut down to allow visitors to wander around the free event, Adamick said. Media One will have a swing dance demonstration at 6 p.m. within the street fair area.

``Hopefully, they'll walk across Market Street and walk right through our street fair,'' Frew said. ``We're going to surround that little triangle right there . . . It should be really quite an affair.''
