watched in amazement as artist Jean Francois Detaille created a science-fiction painting using spray cans.

Peering over dozens of onlookers, the Newbury Park couple stopped momentarily along Moorpark Road to watch Detaille during their afternoon jaunt to the Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by  Community Street Fair.

``He's got a gift,'' said Larry Thompson, 36, who tried to convince his wife to purchase one of the freshly painted items. ``Now when you find someone who can create art using nothing but spray paint and a few tools, you got to stop and watch what's going to happen.''

Throughout the day, Thompson and thousands of others took in the sights at the fifth annual event that is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``It's a real family event,'' said rotary member Martin Anderson. ``In addition to the proceeds, it' an event that benefits the community.''

Promotions chairman Stan Cowan said 196 vendors participated in the street fair on Sunday, which will bring in an estimated $20,000 benefiting local charities.

``We broke a record in terms of vendors this year,'' said Cowan. ``People came from as far as Idaho and Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern .''

Sisters Leslie Chisum and Jessica Stemples tapped their feet to country rhythms while watching the Conejo Valley Cloggers dance on stage.

In a flurry of red short skirts and fast-moving feet, the cloggers dazzled spectators with their jazzy jazz·y

``I think it's a great turnout for a Sunday,'' said Hacken, who lives in Newbury Park. ``It's definitely a good time.''
