The Hackies, which are voted on by teen-agers, were presented to nominees in the three top Oscar categories. Since this year's Oscar nominees are loaded with independent films, a new category was added, Best Blockbuster, which analyzed the top-five grossing films of the year.

In the fall, the American Lung Association does a similar analysis of television.

``Twister,'' was recognized for being a virtually smoke-free tension convention, and thumbs-down went to ``Independence Day,'' for its glorification glo·ri·fy

Thumbs-up went to all five Oscar nominees in the Best Picture category for containing anti-smoking messages.

``Marvin's Room,'' was criticized for buying into the stereotype of rebellious re·bel·lious

Juliette Binoche's character Hana in ``The English Patient,'' who responds to the patient's request for a cigarette by saying, ``Are you crazy?'' earned kudos.

Streep's character Lee in ``Marvin's Room,'' was deemed a loser for wanting to light up in a hospital and allowing her teen-ager to smoke. Streep was also criticized last year for her part in ``Bridges of Madison County Madison County is the name of twenty counties in the United States, named after President James Madison:
  • Madison County, Alabama
  • Madison County, Arkansas
  • Madison County, Florida
  • Madison County, Georgia

In the Best Actor category, Woody Harrelson's Larry Flynt won for discouraging his wife from blowing smoke in his face and Tom Cruise, who had cigars at his ``Jerry Maguire'' bachelor party, was looked down upon.

``First Wives Club'' received a special thumbs-down for its poster, which showed the lead characters smoking cigars.
