STORMS HAMMER REGION; HOUSE, HISTORIC OAK AMONG DAMAGES.

Byline: Yvette Cabrera and Eric Moses Daily News Staff Writer

High tides and surf caused one house to topple into the Pacific and threatened other homes north of Malibu on Sunday as residents braced for a heavy surf advisory this morning.

The latest storm, short but intense, dumped 1.8 inches of rain at the Civic Center, and contributed to the demise of a historic oak in Encino and the death of a Chatsworth man.

Heavy surf began pounding homes along Trancas Beach, just north of Zuma Beach, earlier Sunday, causing one house at 31360 Broad Beach Road to fall into the ocean and heavily damaging the porches of two others. No one was injured.

Bill Rubenstein, a long-time Trancas Beach resident, had walked over to check out the house in the early afternoon when he heard ominous creaking creak

``It looked like it was being pushed over by a bulldozer,'' he said. ``It tilted and caved in and fell onto the beach,'' Rubenstein said.

The owners, who neighbors said use the home on weekends, were unavailable for comment.

Rosemary Bauer, who has lived on Trancas Beach since 1953, spent an anxious Sunday, sandbagging Sandbagging is the practice of deceptively portraying oneself as being in a weaker position than is true.

``I've lived here over 40 years, and this is the worse we've had,'' Bauer said.

During high tide, the waves came right up to her patio. ``It's stronger than we are,'' Bauer said of the storm.

Late Sunday, the surf was lapping against homes up and down the beach.

``Malibu is God's front door, and he doesn't want anybody building on his front door,'' said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Mike Holland. ``He's trying to burn it down, flood it out and knock it down with waves.''

The latest storm brought the season's total rainfall to 14.75 inches, well above the norm of 8.72 inches.

Damage stretched from Acton, where firefighters in a helicopter rescued a man trapped in a flood, to Encino, where a 1,000-year-old oak tree was uprooted.

``For the most part it's going to be a lot less intensive than it was before,'' said Hoffer, who predicted total rainfall would be less than half an inch along coastal areas and up to an inch in the mountains.

The Gattusos survived the crash and were able to climb out of the wreck.

The couple crawled up the wash in the downpour and made it to Retz's home where they tried to call for help, Wheelis said.

``They had to break into (Retz's) house to call 911, but the phone didn't work because power was cut,'' said Wheelis. The couple then trekked back to the other side of the wash and hours later were able to wave down a motorist, who called for help at about 7:30 a.m.

The man and woman, who appeared to be in good condition, were airlifted to Granada Hills Community Hospital to be examined.
