STORM UPDATE: PSE&G RESTORES ELECTRIC SERVICE TO 93,712 CUSTOMERS; 15,263 STILL WITHOUT POWER

NEWARK, N.J., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) is continuing efforts to restore electric service to customers affected by the severe storm that hit New Jersey yesterday. As of 5:30 p.m., PSE&G had restored power to 93,712 customers. A total of 15,263 customers were without service, most of them -- more than 12,300 -- in the Bergen County area.
PSE&G has all available personnel working on service restoration. In addition, a total of 20 crews from Orange & Rockland Electric Company and Atlantic Electric Company are assisting PSE&G. Preliminary assessments indicate damage to at least 105 utility poles and 98 electric distribution transformers. In addition, almost 400 sections of primary and secondary electric distribution cables and 1,045 individual customer service lines have been downed or damaged and more than 440 trees toppled by the storm are in the process of being cleared from poles, cables, and other facilities.
PSE&G estimates that the majority of customers now affected will have service restored by 8 p.m. and the remainder should have service restored by midnight.
PSE&G customers are advised to stay clear of any downed wires or cables and call PSE&G to report downed wires or power outages. PSE&G has brought in extra personnel to handle calls but customers still may experience busy signals due to call volume.
PSE&G serves approximately 2 million customers and is New Jersey's largest electric utility company.
