reported no weather-related accidents on local freeways during a rain- and snow-filled night.

A strong cold front that swept through the area Tuesday night produced snow at elevations just above 2,000 feet and forced authorities to close eight miles of the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley. .

``Perhaps people have finally learned (how) to drive in the bad weather, because there weren't any (weather-related) accidents,'' Sweeney said. ``Everybody was slowing down and in some cases appeared to be going too slow.''

The CHP reported nearly 3 inches of snow fell on the Escondido Summit, and the National Weather Service said nearly 8 inches fell in the Cajon Pass, stranding dozens of motorists.

The freeway reopened shortly after 11 p.m., by which time the worst of the storm had passed. Weather forecasters have predicted a break in the storms for today, but snow and rain are expected again Friday.

``It was a busy night,'' Sweeney said. ``Although there were no accidents, we had several vehicles stuck on the freeway, so we began running escorts.''

CHP escorts also were forced to lead motorists through the rain and snow on the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Snow advisories issued by the National Weather Service were still in effect for much of Wednesday in the Agua Dulce area and for the Antelope Valley.

CHP Capt. Pete Mader was dispatched to the area around the Escondido Summit to consult with Caltrans officials, who had workers standing by with snowplows.

``The captain has been surveying the area, and we'll continue to keep a close watch on the freeways because of this storm,'' Sweeney said.

Temperatures were expected to remain unseasonably cool today, with a high of 60 expected in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California.
