sheriff's deputies, two men entered Hodgkins Jewelers at 1072 W. Ave. K just before 11:15 a.m., while the Hodgkinses, an employee, a jewelry wholesaler and two customers were inside the store.

``They approached the counter and made a small purchase,'' said sheriff's Deputy Marty Shearer. ``As one of the employees began to gift wrap the item, the two customers left. At that time the two pulled out handguns and ordered everyone into the back office.''

Once in the back office, the gunmen opened the store's rear door, letting in four or five more men. As several of the robbers smashed display cases, Terry Hodgkins began to struggle with one man in the office, deputies said.

One robber fired several shots as another punched the wholesaler several times in the face. Then the robbers ordered the victims onto the floor and bound them together using three sets of handcuffs hand·cuff

Deputies said no cash was taken.

Matt Kukawski, 18, who works next door to the jewelry store, said he didn't realize anything had happened until a sheriff's patrol car pulled up in front.

``The police officer stopped right in front of the store, pulled out his weapon and ran inside,'' said Kukawski.

Kukawski was not surprised that Terry Hodgkins struggled with the robbers.

``He's a take-charge kind of guy,'' said Kukawski. ``He's not the type of person to let anyone push him around.''

After the robberies, deputies followed and stopped two cars traveling southbound south·bound
