STONECREST'S ANNEXATION LAYS GROUND FOR CITY MOVE.

CANYON COUNTRY -- The Stonecrest neighborhoods of Canyon Country officially became part of the city of Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  on Wednesday Wednesday: see week.  after months of wrangling between residents who embraced cityhood and others who pushed to stay under the county's jurisdiction.

The action was expected after Friday's announcement by the county Local Agency Formation Commission, which rules on municipal boundary changes, that an insufficient number of protests had been submitted to force a vote on the matter.

The city sought jurisdiction over Stonecrest to extend Santa Clarita's boundary toward land it owns at the site of the proposed 56.1-million-ton Cemex mine. If the mine site ends up under Santa Clarita's jurisdiction, the city hopes to scale back the plan and regulate reg·u·late

This marks the 28th annexation since the city formed in 1987 and the second one that was challenged.
