Medina was wanted for trying to pass a bad check at a nearby Wal-Mart moments earlier, and a sheriff's deputy on that call identified her from the store's security video, Hahn said.

Peterson pulled Medina over about 9:30 a.m. Sunday on The Old Road in Valencia because her car registration tags were expired for more than two years, Hahn said. The checks and credit cards found in the back of her car had been in a Ford Explorer

``We contacted the sheriff's station and they had a deputy out at the Wal-Mart investigating a bogus check and (Peterson) put two and two together,'' Hahn said. ``The sheriff's detective who had just viewed the video identified the driver as the one who had tried to pass a check without I.D.''

Medina's passenger, Christine Dawes, 26, of Canyon Country, was held on a Venutra County warrant, also involving drugs.
