microprocessor with an integrated graphics subsystem.

Windows CE .NET is the successor to Windows CE 3.0 and is a real-time operating system (operating system) Real-Time Operating System - (RTOS) Any operating system where interrupts are guaranteed to be handled within a certain specified maximum time, thereby making it suitable for control of hardware in embedded systems and other time-critical applications.  for use in the next generation of smart, connected, small-footprint devices, including advanced set-top boxes, digital video recorders (DVR (1) (Digital Video Recorder) A device that records video onto a hard disk from one or more ceiling mounted video cameras. Part of a security system, the DVR typically supports 4, 8 or 16 separate camera channels. ), and intelligent residential gateways.

Windows CE .NET offers new features for the digital consumer appliances, including:
- Digital Rights Management for protection of multimedia content from unauthorized playback or duplication.

- Support for the latest Microsoft Windows Media codecs and controls

- Improved reliability and small footprint Enterprise-scale security including support for Kerberos protocol.

"Advanced set-top boxes require a robust and powerful operating system to enable rich user experiences and compelling applications such as industry-leading multimedia and browsing functionalities," said Keith White, senior director of the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corp. "Windows CE .NET delivers this platform, and Microsoft is excited to see STMicroelectronics' ST40GX1 utilize the Windows CE .NET operating system to enable STB OEMs to create powerful and feature-rich Windows Powered devices quickly and cost-effectively."

The ST40GX1 incorporates the SH-4, a 300 MIPs, 32-bit RISC core architecture from SuperH Inc. This 2-way Superscalar core has a compact 16-bit instruction set and includes a 64-bit FPU with unique graphical acceleration capabilities. The CPU CPU

features a highly efficient load-store architecture, delayed branch instruction capability and an on-chip multiplier, resulting in both high code density and fast program execution.

ST used its expertise in System-on-Chip technology to integrate the ST40 core with key system peripherals to provide a high-performance and low-cost semiconductor device for the digital consumer market. The ST40GX1 incorporates a five-channel GPDMA as well as the high-bandwidth SuperHyway internal interconnect, support for PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.
