An STM uses a piezoelectric tube with a tiny sharp tip at the end that is moved within nanometers of the object being sampled. ) announced today that the ST40GX1, the 32-bit microprocessor with 2D graphics and audio processing, is fully supported by Microsoft Windows CE 3.0.

Windows CE support for the ST40GX1 enables OEMs to build high performance digital set-top boxes and other consumer Windows Powered devices. Coupled with ST's STi5514 set-top box decoder, the ST40GX1 processor with Windows CE support provides an ideal platform for developments based on Microsoft TV Advanced. Consumers will also benefit from the wide selection of Windows CE-based applications powered by high-performance semiconductors such as the ST40GX1.

The ST40GX1 incorporates the ST40, a 32-bit RISC RISC

and smart card, 2D graphics with blitter and programmable DENC outputs. Additionally, the ST40GX1 integrates an advanced GAMMA graphics cell with multiple display planes, two video input streams, as well as audio functionality and a glue-less interface to the STi5514 set-top box decoder.

Microsoft Windows CE 3.0 represents a major milestone for embedded developers. Delivering the richest set of technology available on the market today, Windows CE 3.0 enables developers to build rich, mobile embedded devices that demand dynamic applications and Internet services.

New features include:
- Increased granular componentization

- Rich Internet browsing and multimedia experience

- Integrated HTTP server for sending Web-based data

- Improved real-time support

- New functionality for building and distributing rich applications with
Microsoft Message

- Queuing Service for Windows CE and Distributed COM for Windows CE

- More comprehensive driver support.

Microsoft has committed to supporting the SH4 architecture in its future Windows CE operating system, currently code-named `Talisker'. This support ensures that ST's SH4-based CPU-based products such as ST40GX1 will have a guaranteed operating system upgrade path.

"OEMS need powerful microprocessor solutions for their high-performance Windows Powered consumer devices," said Keith White, senior director of marketing for the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft Corp. "ST's ST40GX1 chip, combined with the rich multimedia and Web-browsing features of Windows CE 3.0, enables OEMs to quickly and easily build these data-intensive devices."
