LANCASTER - Now that the summer months are past, September begins a fall bustling with activities that seniors will find interesting, informative and just plain fun.

The Antelope Valley
 Historical Society will hold its annual potluck dinner, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Cedar Center main hall, 44857 Cedar Ave., Lancaster.

Members and guests are asked to bring a hearty main dish, salad, appetizers and/or dessert, with enough servings to share with a crowd. Drinks will be provided by the association.

Following the dinner, President David Earle will talk about his archaeological field trip to the south coast of Peru in July.

Later in the year he plans to continue his report on the dig at the Inca/Spanish site in the Acari Valley, where the buried ancient architecture shows amazing sophistication so·phis·ti·cate

He traveled with a group of students from Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. Everyone is welcome to participate in the potluck and attend the lecture.

Two barbecues that should be of interest are scheduled for Saturday.

The first is the free ``We Haven't Forgotten'' luncheon being prepared by the women members of the Lancaster Citizens Committee for the William J. ``Pete'' Knight Veterans Home.

Serving open-faced, savory beef barbecued sandwiches, salad and dessert spread, the lunch will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. at VFW See Video for Windows.  Post 7283, 44541 Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. Citizens committee chairman Tom Craft will offer a rundown on the history of the effort to build the veterans home. He'll also outline the efforts to date to provide amenities for its residents.

Approximately $150,000 will be needed to furnish all of the extras not provided by government funds.

There will be no charge for the dinner and program, but free will offerings and larger donations will be gratefully accepted.

All proceeds will benefit the amenities fund.

The second event on Saturday will be the Quartz Hill Woman's Club annual scholarship barbecue. This will be an old-fashioned western affair at the Hacienda Lane Ranch, 5600 Hacienda Lane Road, Quartz Hill.

Serving will begin at 5 p.m.
