STILL CRESTING THE FEEL-GOOD SOUND OF SURF MUSIC PROVIDES A WELCOME RESPITE FROM TODAY'S TROUBLES.Byline: Fred Shuster Music Writer The definition of surf music Surf music is a genre of popular music associated with surf culture. It has three main streams or subgenres:
Though holding to some sturdy principles, the music can range from Los Straitjackets Los Straitjackets is a Nashville based band known primarily for performing instrumental rock and roll. It is often regarded as the first surf rock instrumental. It quickly reached #4 on influential Los Angeles station KFWB, and later reached #60 on the national charts. There's something about the surf sound that resonates no matter where you live. People instinctually react to the ocean as this nurturing mass and there's something reassuring about easing yourself into it.'' The Malibooz, whose ``Goin' to Malibu,'' recorded in 1965 when the group members were at college in Washington, D.C., is considered one of the great surf singles, appears Saturday at the Canyon in Agoura Hills on an all-surf bill that also includes the Surfaris (``Wipe Out'') and the Insect Surfers (recently voted best instrumental band at the L.A. Weekly music awards). ``The Malibooz really go back,'' said East Valley resident Gary Larson, 47. ``They're a long-established band that knows the music so well they can probably do it in their sleep. I first heard them about 20 years ago and they were the most authentic surf band I'd heard.'' The wave does seem unbroken. The good-natured 1966 surf documentary ``Endless Summer'' and its 1994 sequel never quite drifted out of style, and a new surf doc, ``Step Into Liquid'' (directed by Dana Brown, whose father made ``Endless Summer''), opens today. Sports networks have long featured surfing championships. Tracks from the Ventures, Dale and others often are used in film and TV soundtracks. Even so-called reality TV has jumped aboard. ``You literally can't fight a wave,'' said Zambetti, who lives in Malibu and surfs frequently. ``It's a cool feeling we try and emulate in the music - the feeling of things being good, things being right. The sense that you're in the water and everything's beautiful. It may sound naive, but it doesn't have to be. ``You don't have to feel down all the time.''
