``Who'd think they'd bust in and steal bonbons?'' store owner Frank Sheftel said Tuesday. ``They didn't touch any of the computer equipment, the scales or any of the really expensive stuff, thank goodness.''

A helium tank and $50 in change also were taken. Sheftel estimates his loss at about $400.

Another mystery: The culprit or culprits apparently sampled two cherry cordials out of a box of 10, rewrapped the box, retied the red bow and put it back in the display case.

``They're liquor cherry cordials,'' Sheftel said. ``It must have been kids. Maybe they didn't like them.''

Officers were called to the store Monday morning after a neighboring business owner noticed a broken window at The Candy Factory, which is closed Sunday and Monday. The culprits were long gone with their tasty loot.

Sheftel puzzled that the thieves chose his store over a nearby computer learning center, a pizza restaurant or a drug store.

``Come on, it's a candy store,'' he said.

Detective Daniel Moran said the heist sounds like a typical smash-and-grab burglary with an unusual sweet twist. He said the suspects probably opted for a sugar buzz when they found the register lacked serious cash.

``We get window smashes from time to time,'' Moran said. ``Usually, it's young adults who break in and take cash.''
