STI ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH LIFEQUEST TO PRODUCE FIRST-MED SYSTEM

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Survival Technology, Inc. (STI) (NASDAQ-NMS: STIQ), announced today that it has signed an agreement with LifeQuest Medical, Inc., to supply STI's exclusive technology in the development of LifeQuest's proposed First-Med system, an innovative hand-held device being designed for rapid delivery of life-saving drugs to the circulatory system through the bone.
The First-Med system is intended to be used by emergency room physicians and paramedics in the treatment of patients in critical situations such as cardiac arrest, shock, drug overdose, seizures and arrhythmias. Such critically-ill patients often have low blood pressure and collapsed veins, making it difficult or impossible to administer drugs intravenously. The First-Med system would bypass this problem by injecting drugs into the bone marrow, accessing the circulatory system in less than three seconds.
STI will provide LifeQuest with its patented drug cartridges, pre- filled with epinephrine and a newly developed needle and needle safety cap system for use in prototype models of the First-Med system. Initial quantities will be used by LifeQuest in pre-clinical trials.
Under the agreement, if these trials are successful, LifeQuest plans to pursue Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of STI's 2 ml. cartridge for use with the First-Med system in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac arrest, a condition which affects more than a half million Americans annually. The parties anticipate entering into a supply agreement for commercial quantities pending FDA approval.
"This agreement is further evidence of the leadership STI has achieved in automated injection systems and expands the potential use of this technology in the emergency room," said James H. Miller, president and chief executive officer of STI. He noted that STI is also working with a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the development of new products using its exclusive auto-injector technology.
LifeQuest, based in San Antonio, is engaged in the development and commercialization of unique and innovative vascular access devices.
STI specializes in the design, development and manufacture of high technology parenteral drug delivery systems, with major focus on safe and convenient participation by the patient in injection therapy. The company also supplies customized drug delivery system design, pharmaceutical research and development and GMP-approved sterile product manufacturing to major pharmaceutical companies worldwide.
