STEVE CHEN FORMS NEW COMPANY

EAU CLAIRE, Wis., Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Steve S. Chen announced today the formation of a new company, SuperComputers International (SCI). Dr. Chen, who resigned yesterday as president and CEO of Supercomputer Systems, Inc. (SSI), said that his new company "will take our shared vision and make it a reality."
For the past 5-1/2 years, Dr. Chen led the effort that successfully designed and built the SS-1, the world's fastest supercomputer. "I want to express my deep appreciation to all those who have supported us in our efforts. I especially want to thank Governor Tommy Thompson and his staff; Eau Claire City Manager Don Norell and Economic Development Specialist Mike Schatz and their staffs; and our congressional delegation for their help and support over the years," Dr. Chen said. "I also want to thank IBM and, in particular, Mr. Nick Donofrio, IBM vice president and general manager of Enterprise Systems. Had it not been for IBM, their world class technology and their financial support, the SS-1 would not have been possible," he added.
The new technologies developed by SSI will have a far-reaching impact on high-performance computing for years to come. Acknowledging the superb contributions of his former employees, Dr. Chen said, "These new technologies are the result of their tremendous hard work and dedication to achieving our dream. None of this would have been achieved without them."
In setting the goals for SCI, Dr. Chen and his team will build on their experience at SSI. "In developing the SS-1, we learned a great deal. We will now apply what we learned in designing and building a new machine for early market introduction," Dr. Chen stated.
SuperComputers International will be a totally new and separate endeavor from Supercomputer Systems, Inc., with no funding or support from IBM. Dr. Chen anticipates funding support from both the public and private sectors. "In our attempt to save SSI, we found a number of potential investors who were interested in our team and our shared vision. I look forward to working with them on our new project," Dr. Chen said.
