STERLING WINTHROP PROGRESS AS GLOBAL CONSUMER HEALTH PRODUCTS LEADER
OUTLINED; NEW BAYER SELECT NON-ASPIRIN LINE IN U.S. ANNOUNCED
NEW YORK, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Sterling Winthrop's global leadership in consumer health products was the subject of a briefing for members of the business and trade media conducted today by Louis P. Mattis, Sterling Winthrop chairman and chief executive officer. As part of the briefing, Sterling Winthrop announced the introduction of the Bayer (R) Select (TM) line of symptom-specific, non-aspirin pain relievers by its Sterling Health division in the U.S.
Mattis was joined in the briefing by Herbert A. McKenzie, executive vice president of Sterling Winthrop and president, Consumer Health Group; and by Douglas L. Meyer, president, Sterling Health (USA), the U.S. consumer health products division. McKenzie provided an overview of the Consumer Health Group's leadership position in key global markets. Meyer reviewed the nearly one dozen new products introduced by Sterling Health in the U.S. since January and unveiled the Bayer Select line of products.
 Meeting Commitments...Focused on Global Leadership
Mattis provided a brief overview of the company's progress in pharmaceuticals, describing the continuing developments of Sterling Winthrop's innovative transnational alliance with Elf Sanofi and the company's overall progress. "We continue to meet or exceed the commitments we've made to our parent, Eastman Kodak Company. For the first half of the year, our sales and earnings were up, reflecting the strengths of both our pharmaceuticals and consumer health products businesses."
Following a brief overview of 1992 milestones by the Sterling Winthrop Pharmaceuticals Group, the chairman turned his attention to the Consumer Health Group. "Leadership in consumer health products is critical to the long-term success of Sterling Winthrop," said Mattis. "As a result, we are clearly focused on managing and building this business to a premier position in the industry." Consumer health products represent approximately half of Sterling Winthrop's overall sales.
 Global Consumer Health Pacesetter
Noting that the Sterling Winthrop Consumer Health Group is "number one outside of North America," McKenzie added, "We're setting a new pace in the worldwide consumer health products business...Our products are among the leaders in their categories and among the most well-known names in the industry."
Focusing on the analgesics category, which represents about half of the Consumer Health Group's global sales, McKenzie told the media that the group is a global leader, "...ranked third in the world, the number one analgesic company outside of the United States and number four in America." McKenzie continued, "We expect the U.S. position to change rapidly," alluding to the success Sterling Winthrop expects for the Bayer Select product line.
 Sterling Health Targets Pain Symptoms
"We've delivered a steady stream of new products and brand extensions, nearly a dozen in our four core categories, in just the first six months of this year," Meyer told the audience in describing the power of the Sterling Health organization. "Many companies would be satisfied with this progress. We are not."
Sterling Health marketing research indicated that more than 78 percent of consumers believe that different pains require different pain relievers. Meyer said, "Sterling Health understands that all pain is not the same."
Meyer unveiled the new Bayer Select line of symptom-specific, non- aspirin products, noting that the product line directly addresses consumer confusion about the plethora of ingredient-based products already on the market. "Non-aspirin, maximum strength Bayer Select products safely, quickly and effectively relieve different kinds of pain: headache, arthritis and body pain, night time, menstrual and sinus pain."
"Most important," Meyer continued, "the familiar brand name, Bayer (R), assures the consumer that they are buying products that they can trust to be the highest quality. Not only do we expect Bayer Select to make it easy for the consumer to treat specific pain but...we believe it will be the standard by which excellence in the analgesics category will be measured for years to come."
The Sterling Winthrop Consumer Health Group is one of the two lines of business of Sterling Winthrop Inc., and markets products around the world under the name Sterling Health except in France and Italy where as part of a European consumer health products alliance with Elf Sanofi, they are sold under the name Sterling Midy.
Sterling Winthrop Inc., headquartered in New York City, is a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of pharmaceuticals and consumer health products.
