STEP INTO THE LIGHT.Byline: Redmond Carolipio Staff Writer Dear Universal, I think a mistake has been made. ``The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay'' is wrong, all wrong. It's a movie game, and it's supposed to be awful. But ``Riddick'' is a masterpiece. Most of the movie-based games of the past are seen as digital publicity machines, with almost little or no genuine creativity. Many of them ask you to ``play the movie,'' forcing you to trudge though recycled scenery and re-execute the same stuff you saw on the big screen. I couldn't find any of this in ``Riddick.'' Let's start with the main character. Riddick is a hard-core ex-con blessed with the ability to see in the dark. This would have been a ripe opportunity for you to do what lots of other people do - cheeze out and give me a guy that's ready to fight. Instead, you chose to make this game a way to craft the legend around the character. He didn't start out with the cool ``dark sight'' ability. I had to discover the story behind it, and then acquire it after several hours of game play. I also learned about the spite-filled relationship between Riddick and a mercenary mercenary Hired professional soldier who fights for any state or nation without regard to political principles. From the earliest days of organized warfare, governments supplemented their military forces with mercenaries. known as Johns. And if that wasn't enough, you went and made ``Riddick'' one of the most visually impressive games ever to grace the Xbox. The screen featured a warped, purple hue and came with its own set of effects, with too much light causing near blindness. The game would have scored points with me if it just had a one-dimensional shooter. But ``Riddick'' complicates things by throwing in some elements of role-playing, stealth and hand-to-hand combat
