STEINBERG OF VAN NUYS LEADS QUALIFIERS GOING INTO MATCH PLAY.

Byline: Daily News

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys shot 4-under-par 68 Tuesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links to take medalist honors in 36-hole medal-play phase of the 87th California Amateur golf championship.

He leads 32 qualifiers into match play, which runs today through Saturday at Pebble Beach.

Steinberg, who finished 73-68-141 is the second straight area medalist, following Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth, who set a tournament record of 138 last year and qualified for match play again Tuesday at 74-77-151.

Jeff Morrison of Castaic also qualified, shooting 78-74-152.

Westlake High School student J.T. Kohut, a quarterfinalist last year as a sophomore, rallied with a 1-over-par 73 Tuesday but could not overcome a first-round 81.

Keith Kinsel of Glendale finished at 153 but lost in a six-man playoff for the final four berths.

Other area nonqualifiers included David Johnson of Palmdale (158), Burbank's Paul Tanner (159), Burbank's Bob Frishette (160), Pasadena's Paul Christensen (163), Travis Matye of Lancaster (165), Matt Heyn of El Cariso GC (168), Newhall's Carlos Robledo (172) and Valencia's Rick Pratt (173).
