STEERING AHEAD LIVESTOCK AUCTION HELPS RAISE FUNDS.

Byline: Peggy Hager Staff Writer

LANCASTER - In the beef barn, children playfully sprayed one another with water while readying their steers for auction.

Rabbits nestled up to frozen bottles of water to stay cool and Jennifer Heckel cooled down her snoozing pig, PMS (Pantone Matching System) A color matching system that has a unique number assigned to more than 500 different colors and shades. This standard for the printing industry has been built into many graphics and desktop publishing programs to ensure color accuracy.  Stinger, with a bottle of water.

Heckel, 16, had a long wait to auction off her 207-pound pig. The swine swine, name for any of the cloven-hoofed mammals of the family Suidae, native to the Old World. A swine has a rather long, mobile snout, a heavy, relatively short-legged body, a thick, bristly hide, and a small tail.  were scheduled last, after lambs, rabbits and beef.

``It's definitely less work to show pigs than lambs,'' said Heckel, who hopes to show a steer next year. ``My mom loves it (raising the animals). My dad's not too thrilled when we bring another animal home ... but he helps.''

Just across from Stinger's pen was one holding Shish Kebab, raised by Loreena Osborn, who died in an accident Aug. 21.

The Quartz Hill Future Farmers of America is auctioning off the 257- pound black and pink pig in memory of Osborn and will use the money for three causes. It will go to help FFA FFA free fatty acids.  members who can't afford to raise an animal, to the Saddle Up Therapeutic Riding Stables to help children who are unable to pay for the therapy and to help pay for Osborn's funeral.

Thursday's Kiwanis Junior Livestock Auction drew hundreds of animals raised by 4-H, FFA and Grange clubs.

The pig pens were relatively quiet compared with the noise of lambs. Nineteen-year-old Wesley Johnson ended his 10-year fair career on a high note taking first place in master showmanship, first in goat showmanship and second in pig showmanship.

A 2002 graduate from Rosamond High School, Johnson is now attending Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  weekdays and the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. ``I'm getting my degree in business because eventually I want to own some sort of cattle or horse ranch or something,'' said Johnson as he returned his lamb, Baldy baldy, baldy-faced

The lamb brought in $390 at the auction. For his showmanship wins, Johnson received belt buckles that will go with three others from previous wins.

Most of those auctioning livestock arrive on fair days at 6 a.m. and don't get home until 10 or 11 p.m. During the day, they care for their animals and hang out with friends, occasionally visiting fair exhibits.

``You have quite a few hours during the day after you get done working your animals and feeding them and cleaning the pens, washing them,'' Johnson said.

For Sarah Dick, 15, with the Littlerock FFA, it was an opportunity to make new friends.

``I met a lot of people and a lot of friends. When I came here I only knew like five people,'' Dick said. ``Now I know over half of them.''

Showing a lamb for the first time, Dick took second place in master showmanship and second place showmanship in her class.

Bob Dick, said his daughter has learned teamwork, responsibility and commitment from working with her lamb which has carried over into her homelife. ``Responsibility-wise, she has grown up a lot. It made her grow up and she loves it so we let her do it,'' he said.

On the softer side of life, 17-year-old Ashley Harkins from the Lancaster Sandblaster sand·blast

4-H is hoping to earn at least $1,500 for her three 11-week-old California rabbits.

The three bunnies were judged together on their uniformity and took home the Grand Champion prize.

``They're supposed to try and weigh the same weight ... They're trying to get them to look like one rabbit multiplied into three,'' said Harkins, who wants to become a defense lawyer.

Unlike the other auction animals, Harkins said many times the auction bidders return the rabbits to their owners.

``Usually, the buyers give them back to me but if they don't, they'll take them home and they will either have them as pets or they will have them butchered for meat,'' Harkins said.
