STEELWORKERS RATIFY CONTRACT WITH A.M. CASTLE

EAST CHICAGO, Ind., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) employed by A.M. Castle & Co. have approved a new 29-month contract, ending long and bitter negotiations that included a two-week strike and corporate campaign by the union, the USWA said today.
The vote, tabulated Monday at USWA District 31 headquarters here, was 116-62. The agreement, covering 230 workers at locations in Franklin Park, Ill.; North Kansas City, Mo.; and Bedford Heights, Ohio, runs from May 3, 1993, through Sept. 30, 1995. It replaces the contract that expired Sept. 30, 1992.
"The successful end to these negotiations is directly attributable to the solidarity of our members and their refusal to have the company's terms thrust upon them," said Leonard Hickey, the union's chief negotiator and assistant to USWA District 31 Director Jack Parton.
The new agreement calls for a ratification bonus, after taxes, of $1,500; 59 cents an hour in wage increases; an increase in pension benefits of $2 per month per year of service; a 401(k) savings plan; company-paid dental insurance; continuation of cost-of-living payments; increased life insurance; and retention of a health insurance plan administered by the Upholsterers International Union (UIU) Health & Welfare Fund. The UIU is a division of the USWA.
The union said that the company's demands to switch to its own, more costly health care program was at the core of the dispute that led the members to vote down its contract proposal and go on strike last Oct. 3.
The USWA said that the members returned to their jobs Oct. 17, working under terms implemented by the company while conducting a letter-of-the-contract in-plant strategy and a corporate campaign outside the workplace to force a resumption of meaningful negotiations.
After that, the two sides met periodically, announcing tentative agreement on April 23.
