 STEELWORKERS FILE ORGANIZING PETITION
ON BEHALF OF USAIR FLEET SERVICE WORKERS
PITTSBURGH, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America (USW) has announced the opening of a nationwide drive to organize 8,000 fleet service workers employed by USAir (NYSE: U) at more than 100 locations across the country, the union said today.
The fleet service jobs include baggage and mail handling, catering, shipping, air freight, and others.
The USW filed petitions with the National Mediation Board in Washington, on April 28, requesting an NMB-supervised election that would give the USAir employees the opportunity to choose the USW as their exclusive bargaining agent. The USW was the first union to file such petitions with the NMB.
In Boston, USW organizers are assisting a committee of USAir employees who are leading the campaign among some 160 fleet service workers at Logan International Airport. Elsewhere in New England, the USW is seeking to bring union representation to about 60 fleet service workers at Bradley International Airport serving Hartford, Conn., and Springfield, Mass., and smaller groups at Worcester, Mass., Providence, R.I., Manchester, N.H., Portland, Maine, and Burlington, Vt.
USW Vice President George Becker, who is heading the campaign, said the effort involves staff organizers and local union volunteers in 19 USW districts across the United States, including USW District 1, which covers the New England states.
"Recent developments at USAir make union organizing essential," Becker added, citing the airline's recent imposition of a pension freeze, tightening of work rules, and proposed wage cuts and medical insurance changes.
"It is clear the workers have no chance to influence conditions at USAir without building the strongest, most democratic union possible," Becker said. "That union is the United Steelworkers of America."
