STEEL HORSE EXPRESS BIKERS FOLLOW HISTORIC ROUTE FOR CANCER FIGHT.

Byline: Michael Gougis Staff Writer

It was nasty hot in Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. It is the business and processing center of a diversified farming (notably dairying) area.  - more than 110 degrees. Harley riders Sandy and Jack Moffitt of Sylmar pulled into a gas station and saw a woman slide off her motorcycle seat and slump into a heap on the ground next to a pump.

Still, they were surprised when they opened the door of the gas station mini-mart to find riders suffering from heat prostration heat prostration: see heat exhaustion; heatstroke.  lying on the floors and propped up against the beverage coolers. It was tempting to stay inside for a while.

``But we got back on the bikes and kept going,'' Sandy Klingerman said. ``Compared to what women with breast cancer go through, this is nothing.''

Sandy and Jack Moffitt, fresh from seven days and 3,400 miles on their bikes, were among more than 100 bikers gathered at Universal CityWalk Universal CityWalk is a part of Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Japan originating from Universal's first park, Universal Studios Hollywood.  on Friday, celebrating the end of the western leg of the Pony Express pony express, in U.S. history, relay mail service. At its inception in Apr., 1860, the pony express operated between St. Joseph, Mo., the western end of a telegraph line, and Sacramento, Calif.  Ride.

The event, the fourth cross-country ride put together by the Women's Motorcyclist Foundation, is expected to raise about $600,000 for the Susan G. Because everyone in the WMF is a volunteer and all the riders pay their own expenses, every dollar raised goes straight to the Komen Foundation.

Hundreds of riders are traveling all or part of the old Pony Express routes that will take them more than 14,000 miles as they zig-zag back and forth across the United States.

Starting in Seattle on July 24th, the ride is scheduled to go through, for example, Kansas, Texas, Florida and Illinois - in that order - before wrapping up in Manhattan a month later.

Distance rides are nothing new to Slate and Shear, who back in 1993 linked up with two other women and did a 39-day, 12,000-mile ride up to the Arctic.

``We thought to ourselves, this isn't common, maybe we can make a fund-raiser out of it,'' said Shear. ``And when we started looking around for causes, we were surprised at how devastating dev·as·tate

So she was happy to get up at the crack of dawn every day for the past week to make a 5:45 a.m. riders' meeting, happy to sleep in campgrounds as she and her husband George wound their way up the Pacific Coast to join the start of the Pony Express Relay ride in Seattle.

``I've worn this shirt every day,'' she said, proudly pointing to a T-shirt covered with the names of her sponsors and of those fighting the disease. ``This whole experience has been such an eye-opener. We've all done some cross-country rides, but this time, we wanted to make a difference.''
