STEALTH TO BEGIN PLAY THIS FALL.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

As with its Single-A team, the JetHawks front office wanted its California League Fall League club's name to reflect the Antelope Valley's aviation background.

On Wednesday, the Lancaster franchise announced its name - the Stealth - and coaching staff, along with the other fall league franchises: the Lake Elsinore Land Sharks, Rancho Cucamonaga Surfers and San Bernardino Sand Dragons.

Lloyd McClendon, the hitting coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was selected as Lancaster's manager. The rest of the staff: Jerry Cram (Colorado) and Jeff Carter (Minnesota), both minor-league coaches. Current JetHawks trainer Troy McIntosh was named a co-trainer for the Stealth.

Choosing Stealth as a name was easy for Lancaster considering the proximity to Edwards Air Force Base Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway. . Four years ago when team owners Mike and Matt Ellis moved their Cal League team from Riverside, they considered Stealth before agreeing on JetHawks.

``We wanted to come up with something that encompassed the area. There's a rich tradition of aerospace and technology in the Antelope Valley,'' assistant general manager Kevin Younkin said. The Stealth's logo and cap design includes a streaking Stealth bomber with a red, black and silver background. ``We think it's slick.''

Rosters won't be announced until later this month, but each team will be able to draw from at least six big-league farm systems.

The Stealth's affiliations include the JetHawks' parent-club Seattle Mariners, the Colorado Rockies, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals For the National Football League team that played in St. Louis from 1960 to 1987, see .

Ex-Dodgers manager Bill Russell, now serving as a manager for Tampa Bay's Double-A Orlando team, will manage Rancho Cucamonga.

Taking over a project that struggled in Hawaii and Maryland the past two years, California Fall League president Joe Gagliardi said this league can be a success.

``It's going to get fans a good picture of future talent for the major leagues,'' Gagliardi said.
