The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility.  County high schools also all performed better than the statewide average for keeping students until graduation, the report said.

``The school district has become very creative in meeting the needs of kids who have a hard time spending a full day in the classroom, with the alternative programs and alternative schools we've been developing,'' said Antelope Valley Union High School District trustee Steve Landaker. ``Instead of losing students through the cracks, we're trying to alter and make custom plans for students with different needs.''

The four-year completion results are part of the annual California High School California High School (commonly referred to as Cal High) is a public school located in San Ramon, California, a suburb of San Francisco, Oakland, and Silicon Valley. , which opened two years ago and this year has freshmen and sophomores only, or for the district's continuation and community schools.

Continuation school continuation school: see vocational education.  dropouts are counted against the high school from which the students originally came, officials said.

In the past two years, Antelope Valley Union School District has opened new continuation schools in Littlerock and Quartz Hill, making it easier for students from outlying areas to get to class; opened the Avenue M Community School for students kicked out of other schools, and taken over the Mira Loma Community School formerly run by Los Angeles County.

It also started doing a better job making sure that each student is completing enough courses to stay on schedule to graduate, improved its alternative learning centers at each high school, and is considering opening a storefront school in Lake Los Angeles for students who don't adapt to traditional school.

``We give the kids every opportunity to succeed,'' said trustee Sue Stokka. ``If they don't succeed in school, it's their doing.''

The effort was spurred by a number of factors, including a high dropout rate reported several years ago, the realization that many students coming before the board for expulsion hearings had completed only a fraction of the class credits needed to graduate, and a perception that enrollment was not growing as fast as the valley's population.

``I think the district staff has done an excellent job at bringing new things to the table,'' Landaker said.

Mojave Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  graduated 86.2 percent of its students, while the Muroc Joint Unified School District had 93.4 percent of its students staying through four years of high school. Southern Kern Unified School District had 93 percent of its students graduating.

Acton-Agua Dulce Unified School District's Vasquez High School, which will graduate its first class in June, reported no dropouts.

Three of the four local high school districts for which results were reported scored better on average than students in Los Angeles County and Los Angeles Unified on college entrance exams Noun 1. entrance exam - examination to determine a candidate's preparation for a course of studies

, but all four scored less than the statewide average.

Statewide, students scored an average of 1,006 on the Scholastic Assessment Test. In Los Angeles County, students scored an average of 957, and Los Angeles Unified students averaged 880.

In the Antelope Valley Union High School District, students scored an average of 963; in Mojave, 960; in Muroc, 907; and in Southern Kern, 972.

No figures were available for Acton-Agua Dulce.

Local students also did not score as well in advanced placement tests to qualify for college credit. The average was 13.9 percent countywide, 12.9 percent for Los Angeles Unified and 12.3 percent statewide.

In the Antelope Valley district, 6.4 percent - up from 5.7 percent the previous year - qualified for college credit; in Muroc, 3.9 percent qualified; and Southern Kern, 1.1 percent did. None qualified for Mojave.

The study also showed that far fewer Antelope Valley graduates go on to college - at least to state colleges and universities - than do graduates elsewhere in California or Los Angeles County.

From the 1995 graduating class, 34.4 percent of Antelope Valley Union High School District graduates went on to a community college, 3.9 percent to a California State University Enrollment
campus and 3.3 percent to a University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States).  campus.

Figures on attendance at private and out-of-state colleges were not available.

At Muroc, 27.3 percent of its students went on to a public college in California, a decline of 0.7 percent over the past two years, while Southern Kern had 22.5 percent, a drop of 8.1 percent over two years. Mojave had 29.6 percent go on to college, an increase of 4.0 percent over two years.

Private and out-of-state college attendance figures were not available for those districts.

Statewide, 51.5 percent of high school graduates went to a two- or four-year state college, and an additional 8.7 percent went out of state or to private California colleges.

Of Los Angeles Unified graduates, 33.3 percent went to a community college, 11.7 percent to California State University campuses and 7.3 percent to University of California campuses. Private and out-of-state figures were not available.

``If we had a four-year college, I think you'd see the number going up,'' he said.

Stokka said the absence of private and out-of-state figures also makes a difference.
