Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, who was voted into Congress in 1996 to oversee the 27th District, took a strong early lead over Peter Hankwitz. Rep. Howard Berman, D-Van Nuys, who first was elected to the state Assembly in 1973 and served there until 1982 when he was elected to Congress, looked set to trounce his challenger Stanley Kesselman for the 28th District. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena, was leading William J. Bodell by a wide margin for the 29th District, which Schiff has represented since 2001. Rep.
