STATEMENT OF USAIR IN RESPONSE TO ASSOCIATED PRESS STORY

ARLINGTON, Va., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- USAir issued the following:
USAir is cooperating fully with the Federal Aviation Administration in this matter. While an investigation is underway, we cannot detail specific information at this time. At USAir, safety is always the top priority, and the airline stands firmly behind the excellence of its maintenance operation. We believe that the following information is important for our passengers to know.
 1. Upon being notified of the allegations, USAir acted immediately to investigate and assure that the activity was confined to two individuals and isolated to one facility -- Indianapolis. No evidence was found of more widespread occurrences. USAir performs maintenance at 38 locations.
 2. None of the irregularities at Indianapolis involved matters related to air safety.
 3. At Charlotte, there was one single incident a year ago involving two employees. USAir immediately took disciplinary action against the employees. USAir and the F.A.A., separately and together, investigated the incident, and the matter was closed last year.
 4. USAir management has never suggested that employees should bend any rules or take shortcuts, nor would this be condoned. In the past, when USAir has uncovered violations, however rare, the company has aggressively and immediately taken disciplinary action. A letter from USAir Senior Vice President Fred Kocher was sent Feb. 26 to all maintenance supervisors reinforcing that any violations of company maintenance standards will not be tolerated.
 5. While cooperating with the F.A.A., USAir immediately initiated its own internal investigation when the allegations came to light. USAir is in the process of sharing these results with the F.A.A.
 6. Where questionable maintenance records were found, USAir has initiated action to recheck and assure work has been completed properly.
Until the F.A.A. investigation is completed, no further detail will be provided by USAir.
