STATEMENT OF ERVIN DUGGAN, PRESIDENT, PBS REGARDING MACNEIL/LEHRER-LIBERTY MEDIA ANNOUNCEMENT

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement of Ervin Duggan, president of PBS, regarding MacNeil/Lehrer-Liberty Media's announcement:
"We wish MacNeil/Lehrer Productions great success in their new venture. MLP has long been a valued producer, not only for public television, but occasionally for commercial media as well.
"From the vantage point of the public television viewer, nothing will change. THE MACNEIL/LEHRER NEWSHOUR -- the nightly embodiment of the PBS commitment to in-depth news and public affairs coverage -- is ours, and ours alone, and it will continue to be so. Moreover, we expect MLP's new arrangement will produce a welcome infusion of capital into the NEWSHOUR and perhaps other important public television productions as well.
"Television -- indeed, the entire telecommunications industry -- is in an age of partnerships. Over the past year alone, PBS has entered into new and productive partnerships with Turner Home Video and Disney; developing more such joint ventures is one of our key strategies for the coming years. In recent years, several public television entities, in addition to MLP, have found equally-rewarding opportunities by producing for commercial media; Children's Television Workshop, Maryland Public Television and WGBH/Boston, to name a few.
"In this environment, it is not surprising that cable, in particular, looks to the proven talents of public television to fill its program-hungry channels. It is a reflection of public television's unique and continuing role as creator of, and home to, top-quality programming -- the progeny of the public-private partnership that is the foundation of our public service mission, and whose birth and sustained health would be unlikely in a profit-oriented, commercial environment.
"Public television producers are some of the best in the business. We're happy to share the wealth, and we look forward to our continued relationship with the NEWSHOUR team."
