STATEMENT BY ROBERT J. EATON, CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, CHRYSLER CORPORATION, ON THE PRESIDENT'S HEALTH REFORM PACKAGE

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is the statement of Robert J. Eaton, chairman and chief executive officer, Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C), on the president's health reform package:
President Clinton's Health Security Act may not answer all the questions about health care reform in the United States. But, overall, it is good news for American families and good news for the business community.
By spreading costs fairly among all employers, the act reduces the cost shifting burden carried by the majority of employers who currently provide health benefits. And by addressing the issue of retirees not yet eligible for Medicare, it responds to a problem truly national in scope, a problem which hurts this country in the global marketplace.
The act subjects the health system to budget discipline. That is a sound, sensible thing to do -- because until we take that step, health costs will continue to drain more and more of our nation's wealth, stealing resources required to meet our country's many other pressing problems.
By providing health coverage for all Americans in a way which reduces the nation's health cost burden, the president's plan is good for our economy, good for our international competitiveness and good for jobs.
