STATEMENT BY LEE IACOCCA, CHAIRMAN, CHRYSLER CORPORATION
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a

statement by Lee A. Iacocca, chairman of the board of Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C), on Japan's "promises" to import more vehicles and parts:
"I hate to say, 'I told you so,' but I told you so.
"When the trade delegation returned from Japan, I said that the commitments President Bush achieved looked good on paper but I was suspicious about Japan's willingness to act on those commitments.
"Now it appears that Japan's 'commitments' on trade are just more hollow promises.
"We shouldn't be surprised or shocked. It's happened time and again. Remember the promises about the voluntary restraint agreement?
"The Japanese are long on rhetoric about targets and goals and efforts to improve but they are woefully short on the actions necessary to alleviate our horrendous trade imbalance with them.
"They know what needs to be done but they are going to fight it every inch of the way. This latest waffling demonstrates yet again their unwillingness to change."
