STATEMENT BY FORD LINCOLN MERCURY MINORITY DEALERS ASSOCIATION

STATEMENT BY FORD LINCOLN MERCURY MINORITY DEALERS ASSOCIATION
DETROIT, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is a statement by Mel Farr, chairman, Ford Lincoln Mercury Minority Dealers Association.
Recently, there have been media reports concerning the Ford Lincoln Mercury Minority Dealers Association (FLMMDA) and its relationship with Ford Motor Company. The purpose of this statement is to clarify that relationship as viewed by FLMMDA.
FLMMDA membership continues to show progress. This year, our members' profit performance has improved significantly. Profits are up in excess of $20 million over the same period a year ago.
More importantly to FLMMDA and the African-American community, Ford has reaffirmed its commitment to continued growth and success of minority dealers. Specifically, Ford has committed to: (1) to increase the number of African-American owned dealerships from the current 185 to 215 by year-end 1993; (2) to maintain its long term goal of 360 effective and profitable African-American auto dealers; and (3) to continue working with existing dealers to improve profitability.
It is true that the FLMMDA membership total is not at the record number (277) of 1989. This occurred because of many factors, including the economic downturn. The FLMMDA is saddened by these dealership losses, and sincerely feels the pain of the individuals that experienced the misfortune of losing their dealerships.
The FLMMDA works constantly to do all possible to help members become successful dealers. The FLMMDA remains committed to its primary objective of ensuring that minorities receive a fair share of Ford franchised dealership opportunities.
Those familiar with the automobile business are well aware that Ford Motor Company leads the industry in minority dealer appointments. Since the inception of minority dealer training programs, Ford leads all others in providing opportunities for African-Americans.
As a result of Ford and the FLMMDA working together, there are a number of success stories within the ranks of the FLMMDA, in spite of today's difficult economic times. Unfortunately, good news seldom makes for newspaper headlines or major media stories.
FLMMDA continues its struggle, and remains true to its original objective. To this end, FLMMDA will continue to work with Ford Motor Company toward reaching mutually desirable minority dealership goals.
